Specimen Days

In many of these images I recognize the influence of the sixteenth-century Dutch still life painters, especially those who explored beauty and mortality by including insects, bitten leaves, and decaying blossoms among the gorgeous blooms they painted against deep black backgrounds.

As I continue the Specimen Days project I see a number of series emerging within it, some of which focus on a particular season in a particular time and place, and others that study a single species of plant, such as the passion vine.
